The political establishment, particularly the Labour Party currently in power, saw public support dwindling due to apparently nothing having been done to control illegal immigration and the perceived negative effects of that eg safety, housing, etc. The response seems to be to curb political opposition and to prevent the public from expressing negative opinions about government policy. Of course, violence and destruction of property must be dealt with legally but when it seems that a particular vote bank has been and is being treated differently, it makes many other people feel that they’re being treated unfairly and are worthless to those who are in charge. Now, we seem to be being ‘ told’ - ‘ If you don’t agree with us, stay quiet or you’ll be punished’. Being in power seems to be being used to retain power by unacceptable means, regardless of maintaining democracy.
