It is also said that battles are not won by killing the enemy, but by in-capacitating as many as possible, in order to tie up resources used to recover and care for those wounded and dying. Unfortunately, from various reports, Putin appears to be using civilians, as wounded to be cared for, to fill this role of the wounded by Ukrainians.
It appears that Belarus has served as a staging post for Russian troops, missiles and aircraft, both before and after Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, but Belarus has not deployed its own forces in active battle. {as at 20 Mar 22} If Russia were to gain access to Lithuania, Latvia and, or Estonia, it would have access to port facilities on the Baltic Sea
If Putin does not wish to have another NATO member country on Russia's border, what will Ukraine end up being - Just a buffer state in which Putin's only interest will be resources and the slave population, and Ukraine simply acting as a buffer zone.
At the present time there are 4 countries having a border with Russia, being Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania. Poland has a border through the enclave of Kaliningrad, that isn't connected to the rest of Russia. Turkey, a NATO member country, is also only separated from Russia by the tiny country of Georgia. Turkey also has effective control of the entrance to the black sea, which, I understand is Russia's only winter port.
