Fascism, as a 'named' phenomena, was invented in interwar Italy. But fascism, as a concept, is as old as the hills. I have seen 2,500 year old Greek plays done by avant garde stages in full fascist regalia - and it is just as poignant. Umberto Eco's 14 points are merely specific descriptive 'talking points' of that Italian iteration. People make the idea complicated because they want to define it so it applies to someone else, not them - which is fascist itself. What is fascism? Simple. It is someone who says, "My way, or the highway; and if you take the highway, I'll get ugly on your arse."
