It is a common misconception that the Chinese of the ROC are Taiwanese; they are not. 'Taiwanese' is an foreign appellation they do not recognize. The real Taiwanese are the indigenous people of the island of Formosa and have been there for thousands of years They are not Chinese. Genetics and linguistic analysis puts them in them as Polynesian.

@PURENT Although, to be fair, China does have a lot of people in power who make disparaging comments about Taiwan. That's one thing the Chinese relationship shares with US vis a vis Puerto Rico.
