Alman556 a comparable example: "The KKK is not Christianity" is not the same thing as "No Christian would ever be a member of the KKK". The fallacy only applies to the second statement.

Kid? I'm 35.

+Charles Martel Actually, no it isn't. If she'd have said "No Muslim would ever be a member of ISIS", that would be the No True Scotsman fallacy. But that's not what she said.

No one's arguing that ISIS is not made up of Muslims. What was said is that ISIS is not Islam, which it isn't. Two completely different statements with completely different meanings.

***** No, ISIS is Islamic — not Islam Westboro Baptist Church is Christian — not Christianity Why does no-one get this?
2
Defining Islam by some elements taken from a self-contradictory book, and not what is actually practised as Islam by the vast majority of Muslims is facetious and not reflective of the reality of the situation.

***** Err… yes. I agree. Thank you, Jesus.

***** I'm glad to hear it. Sorry about the whole crucifixion thing… awkward…

Baigandine L Two subsets of Christianity are both religions. Islam is a religion, but ISIS is a militant, political group, not a religion.

Why does no-one understand this? Yes, ISIS follow their own, extreme version of Islam. They are Islamic, but they are not Islam. Do you understand the difference?

purpandorange I thought that's what this thread was about.

***** To claim that religions are defined by the level to which they follow their texts is not representative of what the reality of religion is in today's society. You are facetiously peddling a technicality and it's intellectually dishonest.
1
***** The trouble is that that's not the reality of what most people practicing religion do. Religion is also complexly intertwined with culture. 'Criticism of religion' is too often used as a smokescreen for racism. While I wholeheartedly support being critical of the more pernicious aspects of religious practices and values, to simplify it down to something unrepresentative of the reality of what most people do is at best, dishonest and at worst, dangerous.

***** You've changed, Jesus.

***** So the tolerant, forgiving, kind Jesus we think we know is a myth? Did you even get crucified or was that an exaggerated account of some horrific DIY accident?
