Essex Farm ADS (Advanced Dressing Station ) where Mc Crae served is on the west side of the canal that runs north from Ipere (Modern Spelling) . Alongside Essex Farm Cemetery. The town is also the site of the Menin Gate.Canadian troops often participate in the Last Post Ceremony there. Mc Crae's brother was surgeoun in charge at the 16th Ontario Military Hospital Orpington Kent. The hospital is still active. The People of Canada donated for the Maple Leaf block, which still serves the local area. There is also a CWWG cemetry at All Saints Church Orpington, and St Mary Cray Cemetery, about one and halfmiles away. Woman got a bus in London, carrying a picture of Elephants. The driver, a friend, said 'Nice Picture! Is it a Shephard?' (Meaning David Shepard, famous Elephant Artist) . The woman apparently looked carefully at the picture, slowly raised her eyes and said 'Nah I fink it's an Elephant'

A reminder of the old saying , we will carry out the work, God and Weather Permitting.

Beatty is a contriversal figure. History has shown that he was a hypocrite, his actions at Jutland , are questionable to say the least.

@chainsoar A 3 litre go kart with a tupperware box on top. Boy were they fun! I used to compete aginst Princees Ann in events, she is a very nice person. Horses don't care about status.
33
Now you need Connan Doyle and the Fairy pictures.

And that children is why you have a Cardboard Brain - A wriiten check list- and STICK to it! Though on one occasion, an aircraft did a perfect landing, except no gear. When asked why nogear the crew replied 'It wasn't on the checklist'. Sure enough on checking, the 'Lower Gear'had been ripped off.

Having visited Walcheren, it is a large flat area. Visit Westkappele and you stand on the dike , looking down. A number of cassions from the Mullberry harbours were towed up to act as as fillers. Middleburg, is a choclate box. Sitting surrounded by canals, with a large hill , with windmills on the outskirts. Following the war the town was rebuilt as far as possible to the pre war design, however a lot of the archives had been lost. It is still a beautiful, and ironically peaceful palce.

A good one to follow this would be The Shetland Bus, including the chariot attack on Tirpitz. As an aside, a lot my teachers were in Jersey Channel Island's during the Occupation. They all taught me, think for yourself, speak the truth, and question everything.

Thank you. Having been brought up somewehere that was Occupied by the NAZIS, you have started a change in my whole life attitude.

If you want another species surviving aginst the odds. Przewalski's Horse , and the Tarpan will fit the bill. Pronounced so I'm told She-vaw-ski

I have never heard of this incident. An intresting paralle is the later Morocan Crisis of 1905 and 1911. Seems to set a pattern.

Speacking as someone of Welsh descent, be thankful you have a ocean bettween you and Scotland. They are never happier than when complaining. By the way if you go to Exmoor, the Tarr Steps clapper bridge, check the Devil isn't sunbathing before you cross.

Henry the VIII was supposed to have been so fed up that he ordered his Fool to be put to death. Though in apprecation of past service he asked the Fool how he wished to die.The Fool thought for a while and replied, Old Age.

Coal Tar emolients and such are still widespread and effective for dermatology and psorasis treatment. The smell though, does leave a bit to be desired.

Eleanor of Aquitaine is the reason why the English coat of arms has Three Lions, whilist the Arms of Normandy have only two. Blow to all the English. The top two Lions speack Jerrias, the bottom one speacks French.

One very odd point of the Royal Irish Rifles during the Great War . D Company (Royal Militia Island of Jersey) 7th Royal Irish Rifles. Jerseymen for historical reasons could not be conscripted into the British Army. However the Island was home to the oldest organised military force in England. From 1284 after the Island's chose to remain with the Duc Of Normandy, through his later claim to the English Crown (Yes, the Channel Island's own England) there was a requirment for all able bodied men to serve in a force to prevent French incursions. On the outbreack of the Great War the RMIJ, asked for volunteers to serve oversea's. In 1915 , 300 men voluntered. It should be note dthe War Office required soem RMIJ to remain as gaurds at POW camps on the Island , and in defence in case of invasion. As 300 men were not enough to form a unit on thier own, the men were attached , for various reasons, including political to an Irish regimane, the 7th RIR. They served in the Somme and during the Spring Offensive.

If your horsemanship gets a compliment in Ireland, you know you are good.

Don't worry we forgive you. :-) Just don't get tied up in the Shires debate. There are some English names most English people can't pronouce.Trottescliffe come to mind near me or Ightham . (Trossley) (Item)

From the book Send Another Signal by Jack Bromme. A Canadian Corvette in an Atlantic Convoy was seen to be flying the Church Pennant, A course flag and an Itergoatory flag. When signalled by the Convoy Commodore 'What signal are you flying? The reply was Oh God! Where am I?
16
Long been a British Tradition 'Send a Gunboat'. Pity we have none left now.

A cut above the rest. The Upper Crust may relate to Medieval bread, the top being clean and free of ash, the bottom whereitwas contact with the floor of the oven burnt and bitty. So the nobels gotTrenchers from the top. Face it boys, we are on theNitty Gritty, Oats were a primary flour, Wild Oats have a black tip ,which when ground look like head lice eggs or Nits in the flour, If the stones are worn or not set correctly the face can breack up ,Grit.

A women's voice frequeincies are particullay suited to electronic communication even now. The amount of Telephone Wire you find on the Western Front is boggoling,.intially it was earth return system, easily tapped. Then came dual wire and the Fuller phone, so the girls would also have had to deal with non verbal messages. These women set a standard , that has carried on.

And the USS Buchan, was transferred to the Royal Navy as HMS Cambelton, the rest is not Forgotten History.

@monkeygraborange To us yes.The problem is to him, he was a Hero. I've heard it described as The Jam Jar. You know the jar was full, you come back Thaw would be standing there , spooon in hand , jar empty , jam around lips and still deny he ate it. Every test you could do with him would prove he belived he hadn't eaten the jam.

A similar set up of disgused Norwegian Fishing boats was used during WW2 to feed agents and carry out covert attacks, most notably on Tirpitz, during WW2 . It was known coloquially as the Shetland Bus.

Lauren's wanted to arm slaves in 1782. In 1781 the Battle of Jersey (See HTG's episode) Pierson was avenged by his black servant Pompey. In 1783 an American artist John Singelto Copley painted a large picture The Death of Pierson , placing Pompey shooting in a prominent place. And you thought current political and moral views were complex?
13
@scotttait2197 Don't under any circumastances bring Wales into this! :-)
13
His brother was chief surgeoun at the 16th Ontario Military Hospital Orpington , Kent.Where Ilive. The people of Canada raised funds to build the Maple Leaf Block on the site , which still serves the localcommunity.

George Mc Donald Fraser's The Complete Mc Causlan. He was subeltern in the regiment. Not, all true , but hilarious and a good read. Don't forget the whistle, still issue to certain Britsh Military officers.
13
I had a similar experience with veterans at Normandy . we were at one of the Cemetries at Ver Sur Mer, standing in silence. Two young children ran in laughing, one adult started shouting at them to be quiet. One of the veteran's yelled ';Leave them alone! These men died so chilldren could laugh. tears in the eyes typing this .
12
Someone got into a pickle though!
12
Still a sought after tool, they work!
12
Fair exchange, is no robbery! :-)

Stealing names from places that are Norman , and named by a Normon De' Carteret. Scottish canals ? I thought you were going to say the proposed canal across Scotland, intended to allow Royal naval access the North Sea. (German Ocean as it was known at the the time) . The advantage of that mentioned at the time was Scotland could have been cast adrift.
12
A well respected TV commentator on Britsh TV during the 60's and 70' wa sRaymond Baxter. He was a Malta piolt on Spitfires. Beurling wrote a book Malta Spitfire . For Pedestal speciffically I'd recommend the book Malta Convoy by Peter Shackland and Anthony Hunter.
12
@alexanderlittle9786 To the point of ordering serving Royal Naval Officers to change official documents , logs and charts to cover up your mistakes? Then when they refuse, going out of your way to blight thier carrers? Not to mention the smears on Jellcoe. Beatrty was not liked in many circles political, military or social.
12
It has brought you out of your shell, I suppose.
11
What's brown ,steams and comes out of Cowes? The Isle of Wight Ferry! (I'll get my coat)

A Canadian Corvette as part of convoy escort in the North Atlantic storm was seen to fly the following signal: A church Pennant over an Intergatory , over a Course flag. When the Convoy Commodore Queried by light 'What Signal?' The reply he recived was 'Oh God! Where am I?'

The Avro Tudor was the first British Commercial Pressurised aircraft. Fatigue due to pressurisation was not well understood at the time, "The Tudor was built like a battleship. It was noisy, I had no confidence in its engines and its systems were hopeless. The Americans were fifty years ahead of us in systems engineering. All the hydraulics, the air conditioning equipment and the recircling fans were crammed together underneath the floor without any thought. There were fuel-burning heaters that would never work; we had the floorboards up in flight again and again. Gordon Store BSAA Chief Pilot.

Congreve Rockets were manufactured at the Royal Arsenal Woolwich. The rockets were notorious for accidents during manufacture. It is said they did more damage to the town of Woolwich, than they ever did to the enemy.

Are you implying that Nottingham , that produces Stilton, would resort to inferior Wenslydale? 😵😵💫

I've visted the Essex Farm ADS where he was posted. Think of a slightly oversized Concrete coal shed, about fifteen feet deep , seven or eight high and about four wide. Three of them side by side dug into a bank . On once side the Yeser canal, the other is now the road.In front about another four to six feet a bank about ten feet high. Behind you what is now Essex Farm CWWG cemetery. Now add darknes cold, and enemy shells .

@SeanBZA Have you heard of Project Gutenberg? Lots of old books on line for free.

I remember a friend of mine was quoted a fortune to knock down an old barn. So he bought a lot of cheap beer and scrumpy cider , then invited us all to bring a sledge hammer:-)

Still standard issue to many forces in UK. 😁

@TheHistoryGuyChannel For those of us who have worn Queen Elizebeth II uniform, and acted in her name. The feeling was &*(( The Govenor is dead! She earned true loyalty, and never betrayed it.
