  1.  @JarrodFrates  No, any person may win the Victoria Cross, for Valour 'In the presence of the Enemy'. It was awarded to Army Service personnel, who were Civillians in the South African Wars. The George Cross, now the George Medal , is awarded to anyone who shows Valour, other than in the face of the Enemy. It has also been awarded to Military personnel.

  3. Re your last: I have checked the Warrant: It may be awarded to a person of any rank in any service and to civilians under military command.

  4.  john osborn  Yes I remember that. The question was asked why not the VC? The answer, typically British was 'Though his actions were outstanding, unbenowenst to him , the Enemy had withdrawn'. Dammed unsporting of them!

  6. As an aside , there is a simple railway goods van number 132, built in 1919. It's claim to fame is the carraige of three heros on thier last journey. Nurse Edith Cavell , Captain Charles Fryatt, and the British Unkown Warrior.
