  3.  @barvdw  Yes, but older.The Channel lIsland's were originally part of the Duchy of Normandy. In 1066 William took the English crown, in addition to his existing titles. Remeber Normandy was originally seperate from France. The English crown had lands in France. Then in 1204 John Lacland lost the lot.The Channel Islands had the choice of staying with the Duc Of Normandy, by default the English crown, or reverting to French rule . Well *&^^ that! As a reward the Islands becamea self governing Bailiwick,and were allowed a Mace and the useof the Royal Seal. Fast few a few hundred years to 1920's Jersey decided to get a Tug Boat , call it the Duke ofNormandie and put the Royal Seal on the bows.The College of Heralds in London wern't having that and told the States take it off. They got the same sort of reply interfering English establishments still get nowadays. Any way it went as far as the King to make a decison .The College of Heraldry stated that thier records since thier inception in the 14 Century showed no grant of arms. Jersey's reply , was, what has modern history got to do with it? We were granted the seal in the 13 century. Guess who won? :-) The Monarch is Head of State his or her represenative is the Lieutenat Governor, we have never had a Govenor! They sit below the Bailifff,who is the head of the Island in the States Chamber.

  4.  @barvdw  As you say, Theory:-) Iwouldnt like to be the one that tells a Normand they are subservient to Paris, even nowadays :-) Though the 100years war, like most conflicts really ,had been brewing for a long time. Eleanor of Aquataine wouldbe a good subject for THG.She'd fit straight into Game of Thrones ,she sat on enough.

  6. It depended on who was being painted, why and by whom. If the subject was considered a Villian, you do see sutle cariceture in portraiture. Paintings wer ethe Media ofthe day, so positioning of figures and pose, dress you were portrayed in , set dressing , and how much you were willing to pay for expensive pigments, all counted.

  7. In the Villiage of Tilly Sur Selles (BE careful there are actually two) in Normandy July 1944 there was a major battle for a cross roads. At the time there was a statue of Joan D'Arc, Maid D'Orleons on a plinth in the middle. It got hit by a shell. The villigares keep the staute saying Joan was shot through the heart. I visited the museum in which it is kept with a ballistics expert. We all solemly listned , then on leaving my friend burst out laughing. He reckoned she had shot from behind low down. On the plus side the villiage also produces the oldest and best Calvados in Normandy , there fore the world. Like drinking liquid sunshine.

  9.  @cornbreadfedkirkpatrick9647  Be prepared I did so recently ,now having grandkids. Found out my Farther lost his elder brother in a South Wales mining accident in 1914, and my maternal grandmother ,who obviously I never met, died 18 months after. He never spoke of it.
