@centercannothold Do you know why Pol Pot decided to betray Vietcong after 1975? Because when Khmer Rouge and the Viet Cong cooperated against the West, Pol pot discovered the Vietnamese ambition in the archives of Vietcong, Vietcong didn't even hide its goal to unify French Indochina Federation, because predecessor of the Communist Party of Vietnam was the Communist Party of Indochina.
The ancient Vietnamese annexed the ancient Lower Khmer, which led to the Cambodians always distrusting the Vietnamese. Whether it was King Sihanouk, Lon Nol, or Pol Pot, whether left-wing or right-wing, they were all anti-Vietnamese.
However, Pol Pot discovered that although the Vietnamese Communist Party was a left-wing party that was anti-imperialist, anti-colonial and anti-invasion, Vietnamese still regarded Cambodia and Laos as its own land or puppets.
So after the Khmer Rouge captured Phnom Penh, Pol Pot immediately stopped hiding his anti-Vietnamese sentiments and began to expel ethnic Vietnamese and pro-Vietnamese factions within the Communist Party of Cambodia, and even began to massacre Vietnamese minorities in the country, which led to the Cambodia-Vietnam War 1978-1989.
The Vietcong overthrew the Khmer Rouge, occupied Cambodia, and controlled Laos, and then the CCP intervened in the Third Indochina War. The Sino-Vietnamese conflict lasted for 12 years, starting with a one-month invasion in 1979, and then 12 years of border artillery battles, CCP kept bombing Vietcong on boder also armed Pol Pot guerrillas against Vietnamese occupation, ASEAN and USA support ed CCP then because Right-wing countries in Southeast Asia are all afraid of communism, also afraid of invasion of Vietnam, so Thailand Singapore supported CCP against Vietcong.
Deng Xiaoping finally told the Vietcong and the Soviet Union that the condition for Sino-Vietnamese reconciliation was Vietnam's withdrawal from Cambodia and Laos, and the condition for Sino-Soviet reconciliation was the Soviet Union's withdrawal from Afghanistan. Shortly after Le Duan's death, the Soviet Union stopped aid due to economic difficulties.
Gorbachev withdrew his troops from Afghanistan after visiting Beijing in 1989, and Nguyen Van Linh withdrew his troops from Cambodia after visiting Chengdu in 1990.
You guys just don't know the history of the Cold War at all.
