Western media never tells whole story, like they never mentions that ROC Taiwan right now yes I mean TODAY still claims 11dashline in ROC constitution,
Taiwan not just claims but also controls biggest island Taiping island and Dongsha island very near to HK, but Taiwan lost Thitu island to Phillipines due to storm 1971.
Ironically when Republic Of China(in Nanjing) claims all islands within 11dashline it's supported by both West and Soviet after WWII in 1945, nobody opposed ROC then.
That's why it's called SOUTH CHINA SEA in Western map, Western map issued by government also says South China Sea belongs to China(ROC then),
More ironically US navy even gave 4 warships for example USS Decker (DE-47) to Chinese took over Taiping island and Thitu island etc in 1946,
American Phillipines, French Indochina and British Malaya didn't oppose Chinese claim then maybe it's because they even didn't get independence from West yet,
Now it's just too late because Chinese got legitimacy from international world and PRC navy is just too powerful,
PRC Beijing inherited 11dashline from ROC Taiwan after Chinese Civil War 1949, both PRC or ROC claims same like HK Macau Mainland Taiwan Tibet Xinjiang and 11dashline,
But PRC changed to 9dashline claim after PRC gave Bach Long Vi island to Vietcong in 1957 during Vietnam War, then PRC only claims 9dashline since then,
PRC won naval batttle and retook Paracel island against South Vietnam navy 1974, Vietcong used to support PRC against South Vietnam but changed after Vietnam unification.
PRC won naval battle and retook Johnson South Reef against Vietcong navy 1988, but PRC was still weak on military and economy so PRC can't take back all islands then,
so it's not PRC come out recently and claim whole, if ancient claim is not legitimate enough, then West and Soviet supported Chinese in 1945 should be legitimate,
Now US navy wanted to cut off 70% China's lifeline there, that's why China is trying to arm more islands and prepare for naval war with US navy,
If US navy is not there then China can still just leave the issue alone, because China also didn't want to make enemies with ASEAN countries,
I even can say China can make compromise if Vietnam or Phillipines are Chinese allies, remember China gave Bach Long Vi island to Vietcong before?
But US is trying to use South China Sea as tool to threaten China and win ASEAN, it's kinda complex that China need to balance relation with ASEAN and control of 70%lifeline,
But why West and Soviet supported Chinese claim on South China Sea in 1945?
Does West also oppose Taiwan's claim and control on South China Sea now? Taiping island is very very far from Taiwan if you look at the map.
