I think therapy is starting to fulfill the role in the urban monoculture that religious gatherings and advisors did historically. Nyt had a article a while back about a polycule and one of the guys mentioned how therapy helped him stop feeling uncomfortable about it, it reminds me of how in a more traditional society someone with marriage troubles would seek counsel from a pastor who would subtlety enforce the culture by leading their decisions.
