When it breaks down carbon...chunks get set free to clog oil ports in the cam areas,causing real troubles...and other small oil ports...use top tier gasoline,and it limits the carbon buildup in piston,and keeps injectors cleaner....valve carbon...walnut blasting if cleaning needed....no type of magic elixirs work on gdi valve buildup

  2. Additives are verboten according to VW, use the correct spec oils, according to meeting VW 502, 504, 507 etc, means it has all the correct additives..aftermarket additives are a goof. How can a can of universal additives work in all engines, when mfg's have specs on bottles of oils, when some don't some do meet mfg specs, it ain't just viscosity
