I imagine the Maharajahs in India and those who ruled over Princely States loved the Empire as they became extremely wealthy exploiting their own people. African slave traders made a fortune selling their own people into slavery too. I went to university with an Indian Muslim who was heir apparent to a former PS and he had nothing but hatred for Gandhi. Ordinary people don't like being exploited and especially not by foreigners.
