I visited South Africa in 1980, when Musk was a kid there. It was like a time warp, going back 30 years into the past. I guess Musk's idea of the future is a South African future, thirty years behind the times.

@brandonderrick006 So do electric Mercs and BMWs, only they do it better. I gather BYD and SAIC are pretty good too though I don't see them every day (other than the odd MG badged.)

@ Splashbacks are usually 304, this is a cheaper alloy (more impurities I think) that will stain quickly.
4
Too late too for a cheaper Tesla. The Renault 4 and 5 have arrived, though they won't reach the US. Stellantis even has a mini electric Jeep using the same platform that brands not sold in the US use. Even without China, Musk has lost the smaller EV market.

I used to know someone who bought an aircooled Porsche in the 1970s and maintained it himself. He was still commuting in it in 2010. OK you had to stay on top of the rust, but that was about it. Those things are made to last if you look after them.

People like Musk cannot be wrong and e erybody who works for them must agree with them, so it won't happen.

Used to be said that if you wanted a Porsche you needed available cash + investments to buy three if you didn't want to worry too much.

Any modern car with Level 2 driver assistance will do as well as a Tesla except that ones with radar will still emergency brake in fog or heavy rain.

@stevenrobert8567 The word "Panzer" actually means shield or protection (PzKw - Panzer Kampfwagen - shielded war chariot.) As it doesn't provide much protection and bits fall off, I think we should find an alternative to the Panzer bit.
2
@stevenrobert8567 As I tried to explain, in WW2 Germany called tanks PzKw - PanzerKampwagen. This is nothing to do with the Panther tank. Today they are called tanks.

Have you been paying attention? BYD and CATL won't be supplying the US market.

The CT is not in Ferrari or Lambo territory. It's merely an expensive pickup truck with a badly designed bed and will only impress sales and marketing types. For a bit more money you could have an electric G-Wagen which is genuinely capable. For a bit less, a top of the range Merc SUV. OK it won't tow as much but it will tow its rated load without risking fatigue failure of the chassis.

@youevil9846 Don't tell Musk, he'll want to invade France, take over the government, and have him listed as the founder of Citröen.
1
Well Trump's a con and he employed a pro or two, so the two of them fit together well.

More or less what people said when Porsche brought out the 944. But actually there are good engineering reasons for modern 4 cylinders. If you can get the power and reliability out of 4, why add more especially with a much more complex engine layout?
1
The issue is that unlike the RoW, the US allows manufacturers to self-certify. In Europe you have to have type approval testing by the government for everything from a 50cc motorbike up. Which is one of the reasons US cars really don't sell there.

@ More complicated than that. The more expensive alloys are required to have lower impurity elements. It's the electrochemical reactions with the impurities that cause the staining.

@timonsolus Scaling to a BMW G73 it would weigh around 7 tonnes, drastically reducing range. But as someone who once worked in tank R&D let me point out that the near-vertical front and sides would be penetrated by even small bore cannon, a large sheet of armoured glass gives very limited protection, and you're not going to support that thing with puncture proof tyres. A Warrior IFV, which is about 50% bigger, and is a real armoured car, has a mass of 25 tonnes.
1
@timonsolus That's why I also compared to the BMW politician carrier. It's 4 tonnes with a petrol engine, and smaller than a CT, so extrapolating to allow for the battery and extra space I got around 6-7 tonnes. The Warrior is an IFV - infantry fighting vehicle. I was giving an example of a serious armoured car. The protection given by the BMW one - well, hope someone never gets to use HEAT or even an APFSDS round on it, it wouldn't be happy.
