Ah yes. We had someone at my first job whose rich mummy bought him a Lotus. He got a flat so he tried to jack up the car and put the jack through an aluminium suspension arm. Then he discovered it was cold in winter (no insulation) and had the bright idea of filling the doors and a few other places with expanding foam. After which, of course, it was a firetrap and the windows wouldn't work. I believe he had to sell it for parts at little more than a year old. Chapman's cars needed to be owned by people with degree level automotive engineering to be trouble free.

It was the Troubles and the UK government was desperate to bring jobs to Northern Ireland. DeLorean wasn't the only US conman who got money from the UK government in this way.
