  1. I had a much heavier duty version of that rhombic jack, it was East German, TüV approved and rated 1.5 tonnes. I reckon that was a cheap imitation. The steel looked about half the thickness.

  2. HSS is intended for cutting at moderately high temperatures, not for strength. And the grade of titanium is extremely important - a lot of titanium alloys will crack, not deform. As for brass, there are many different ones. This one broke, but free cutting brass used for a lot of decorative and domestic work will bend back on itself before it breaks. Brasses contain varying mounts of copper, zinc, tin and lead, and pure 58% copper/42% zinc can be deep drawn.
