The problem is that Catholics are supposed to confess their sins regularly, so if priests are attracted to other men they are required to confess it even if they do nothing about it.

No, it's because the Catholic Church is the union of Pauline sects and Roman paganism, and gets hugely tangled up with things like Cybele-worship. The Eastern church avoided that and its regular priests can marry but bishops can't.

So: someone I knew, an extremely intelligent and well educated guy from Ireland, was persuaded to train for the priesthood. After a year it dawned on him that he was gay and training wouldn't cure it. So, he resigned. The bishop tried to persuade him otherwise. According to this guy - who was very honest and I believe him - the bishop said to him, "Forty percent of my priests sleep with their housekeepers, forty per cent are gay, it's the other twenty percent I worry about." However, he was so pure minded he insisted on leaving and became a social worker (at which point we lost contact).
