For those who may not remember him, before WW2 the British politician Edward Heath spent a lot of time warning about Nazi Germany and asking the government to support the Republicans in Spain. Later as PM, he would sack Enoch Powell for stirring up anti-immigrant sentiment. As I was told it, and by a Liberal politician no less, the argument between Heath and Wilson really was that Heath thought Wilson compromised too many moral principles in his negotiations. Heath was awkward in front of the media but when he came and spoke to the Cambridge Union I remember someone saying afterwards "Was that really Heath?" because he made an impassioned and articulate argument for joining the Common Market. He also expressed the view that Margaret Thatcher was "raving bonkers" because of her Randian right wing ideas and meanness (like stopping school milk, intended to protect poor children from rickets without singling them out.) Heath was a Left Conservative, and he was sabotaged by the unions and the right of his own party.
