  1. The male Ukrainian refugees I know will probably never be able to go back because they would be arrested. You need to be well off to afford the bribes to get on the boat to Turkey, several thousand dollars or Euros. And then the air fare to this country. The mid 1990s were after independence and in the middle of the misgovernment of Yeltsin; it isn't surprising people were not having children. And Zelensky is still the face of an oligarch, just a different one from the ones before.

  2.  @emmabrooker166  I don't have chronic toothache thanks to my...er...Nigerian dentist. Some people in this country really do need to be treated as second class citizens compared to some immigrants. I'm thinking Leave voters versus the NHS here.

  3. Meanwhile the French retain a pointless verb conjugation system. Je regarde, tu regardes, il regarde, nous regardons, vous regardez, ils regardent. Are you suggesting we would all be better off if we reverted to Old English? Proper declensions and conjugations? Because retaining one special conjugation for the third person singular makes no sense at all.

  4.  @Pooter-it4yg  Знаю. See what I did there? English has evolved towards prefixes rather than suffixes. It's basically a commercial language evolved to be a lingua franca, if you see what I mean. Meanwhile the Germans keep having arguments about simplification and the French tinker around the edges so that these days I can't remember which words no longer have circonflexes and çedillas, let alone where ß isn't used any more. Our sentence structure is different from Slavic* languages because we rely on positional order. This presents a problem for Bulgarian which doesn't have Russian word order flexibility, for instance. You may find these things fun but if you need to get a job done they can be rather annoying. *As for the flavours of Slavonic, I'm not Othodox and thank Bog I don't need to know about them.

  5. They couldn't admit that they lost. The biggest problem the US faces is that its permanent state of boosterism means it cannot face up to reality. If reality is bad, just lie about it in the media.
