  1. It is over-represented on the US Supreme Court, in the UK Parliament and elsewhere. It is not wrong to say that since before official records began the Church actually founded by Saul of Tarsus has been trying to take over governments. It has repeatedly tried to take over the English government - four times in the 16th century. It has to be taken seriously because as religion declines in the West, its efforts to stay relevant will become more desperate.

  2. In 1570 Pope Pius V issued a bull equivalent to a fatwa, allowing Catholics to resist the Queen of England. In effect, he encouraged revolution and regicide. England survived because the Queen allied with the Muslim Ottoman Empire. Popes have constantly interfered in European politics right up to the present day. Popes were pro Franco and pro Salazar. Blair's conversion was seen as a triumph for the Church, which is also massively over-represented on the US Supreme Court. Catholic bashing is periodically necessary.

  3.  @fredarcher7264  A mixed bag. I had a high regard for my supervisor on Newton but a number of them seemed at times on the verge of saying "Of course what His Holiness meant was..." followed by the precise opposite of what he said. Their excuses for the house arrest of Galileo were tortuous to say the least.

  4. Slippery slope argument. Divorce has released a lot of people from loveless marriages, on the whole it has been a public benefit. I'm not sure where you are going with this.

  5.  @joekavanagh7171  Purest fantasy for which there is no evidence whatsoever. The Catholic Church is a combination of Roman paganism, the Pope is the descendant of the _flamen dialis_, the High Priest of Juppiter. Jesus made clear his opposition to churches and group worship.

  6.  @fredarcher7264  Romero and the Franciscans are pretty corner cases, the early Franciscans were persecuted by the Church. I admire the Franciscans but the Dominicans and Benedictines can do one.
