  1. Much of what you say about Russia could equally be said about Imperial Britain and today's US. You are just watching Trump behave with a cynicism even Putin must find amazing, but the main difference between him and previous US presidents is that with a very few exceptions - like Carter and Bush 1 - one suspects they behave the same in private but don't say it in public. And both Carter and Bush were one term presidents, because Americans don't like diplomatic negotiators. They want authoritarian strong men who follow the "who compels us to keep our agreements?" school. The Cold War was between two dysfunctional powers using Europe and the ME as a chessboard, and now Trump wants Europe to pay for the destruction of trust the US caused.
