What? That's complete nonsense. Underground cables cost more because of the need for insulation and the cost of digging, plus providing access. Psychic News or The Spark are not physics textbooks.

I have solar PV. Let's say 10 million feasible houses at £8000 a go. That's actually quite a bit more than Hinkley Point. It's 40 TWH a year. Hinkley will produce about 20TWH/year. The problem is seasonal variation, however. Hinkley produces its power all winter and at night. Wind turbines too are variable in output. Hinkley's 20TWH is of more economic value than 40TWH of solar. My EV is a net consumer of power from the grid almost all winter, and I export a lot in summer as well as charging the car. An economy that runs in daylight for 6 months of the year won't be very productive.
