@I_am_somebody_1234 The deal was only valid if HK abides by their mini-constitution. But HK failed to uphold their mini-constitution. That is why Beijing had to get involved.

@Itsuki220 HK failed to uphold their mini-constitution. That is why Beijing had to be involved. Beijings non-involvement is only assumed if HK upholds their end of the bargain. And the "prosperity" you spoke of was an exploitation of HK being the "gateway" to China when it came to trade. Once China became bigger and more open, HK lost its status as its "gateway" to China. That golden period was merely an exploitation of the times. Moreover, for the most of HKs history under British rule, there was no election. Yet HK did great. Let that sink in.

@flyonground Appointed after winning HK elections. And no, HK had a constitutional duty to create their very own "national security law" under Article 23 of their mini-constitution. But they failed to do so after over 23 years in. Tell me how they have upheld their Basic Law again.

@flyonground Sure, it didnt specify a deadline. Constitutions or Basic Law isnt meant to. Beijing left it to HKs hand it in good faith that itll be completed within a reasonable time frame. Almost half of the 50yr and still no sign of fulfilling does not mean its done in good faith. Almost 25yrs of the 50yrs is more than enough time for any consultation. This isnt the extradition bill. This is Article 23 we are talking about. Theres no controversy. HK was in the wrong. Failure to fulfil their constitution duty in almost half its "life" is valid grounds for Beijing to intervene. Especially when the national security was at stake.

@pulithevar8135 If you think HKs government is ineffective, then you havent seen the West...

@prfwrx2497 So Cantonese can on longer be spoken? HK cannot practise what they previously practised?
