The status quo was clearly changed when the DPP was created and elected into power. The status quo was that there is only "One China" and that Taiwan is part of that "One China". The only disagreement between PRChina (Chinese government in Mainland China) and ROChina (Chinese government in Taiwan) is that they believe that they themselves are the legitimate ruler of this "One China". By creating and electing a pro-independence DPP into power changes the status quo. Chinas military operations is in response to that change in status quo.
