  4.  @KonradofKrakow  "What?! Russia never had control over those countries?! Your ignorance is shocking..." Yes, Russia never had control over those countries. USSR did. USSR is not Russia. Russia is part of the USSR. The "U" stands for UNION. Just like the European UNION. Saying Moscow had control over the other counties is like saying Belgium has control over the EU just because it is headquartered there. "Yes, China has the right to not give away its land. But does it really control Taiwan? No" Which China? PRC or ROC? Both governments claim to be China remember? And civil war hasnt technically ended yet. So military options is still on the table if "control" is the defining factor. "and any decision they do make is legal according to international law" Any decision? Taiwan independence is not legal any any means. It violates Chinese law (both ROC and PRC). And civil war is also legal under international law. Your point? "If I were you I would try to focus on convincing the Taiwanese to vote against independence instead of telling them they have no right to vote, because they do. Otherwise you risk annoying them and getting the opposite result you want" When did I say they had no right to vote? You can vote all you want. But at the end of the day, votes does not equate to power, because might is right. In the end, whoever as the power wins. Votes tend to work only when theres stability. When its something so sensitive like sovereign territory or civil war, youre telling me voting is more powerful than firepower? Because it certainly feels like you think that way. Moreover, PRC guarantees Taiwan for be administered separately from the Mainland. Meaning Taiwan is still able to have extremely high autonomy to govern themselves.

  5.  @KonradofKrakow  "The Soviet Union was NOTHING like the EU - you have no idea what you are talking about, to the the point it is intellectually insulting" Who said I said the Soviet Union was like the EU? The fact that youre miscomprehending basic English and putting words in my mouth is intellectually insulting. For the 3rd time, Russia never had control over those countries. USSR did. USSR is NOT Russia. Russia is PART OF the USSR. The "U" stands for UNION. Just like the European UNION. By that, I mean it is a collective group of nations, not USSR structure is similar to the EU. "Russia definitely controlled those states. It controlled the entire Eastern Bloc" The country of "Russia" didnt control those states. USSR did. The capital of USSR just happened to be in Moscow thats all. The fact that you cant tell the difference is also intellectually insulting. And the Eastern Bloc includes China and Vietnam. To say "Russia" controlled the entire Eastern Bloc which includes China and Vietnam is also intellectually insulting. Moreover, Stalin is Georgian, not Russian. Not controlled by "Russia" again. Its controlled by the USSR! "If you say "might is right" you are nothing more than an imperialist" I specifically said those are not my words. But whoever said that is not wrong. You cant disagree to that as there is a degree of truth to it. "Peoples' votes, their desires, should be respected" Sure. I desire no tax. In fact a significant proportion of my country (and the world) prefers no tax. Should our desires be "respected"? Sure it can be "respected", but does it mean those with power should listen to us and enforce that? No. Theres no obligation for any government to enforce peoples desires just because they voted so. Governments tend to do whats they think is best for their country. "obviously Canada could use "firepower" to force Quebec to stay, and England could use "firepower" to force Scotland to stay in the UK - but would that be right? No . No , it wouldn't" Every country has their own ways of doing things. If thats how they prefer to do things, then let them be. No one can say anything about that. Same goes for China. "If China and Chinese people do not respect the will of the Taiwanese people, then no wonder the Taiwanese do not want to unify - who would want to unify or cooperate with a country does not take into account what you want, what you feel, and what you think?" Remember what I said earlier? Governments have no obligations to enforce peoples desires. They will do what they think is best for their country. Otherwise my countrys desire for no tax HAS to be implemented. But that would cause civil unrest. So the government wont. Also, unless youre talking about Taiwanese aboriginals, all "Taiwanese" are Chinese by blood AND by nationality. Citizens of Republic of CHINA are CHINESE by default. "They see what's going on in Hong Kong, and they don't want anything to do with that" Oh whats going on in Hong Kong? They self-govern themselves.
