As the doctors suggest, washing hands frequently, not to touch surfaces you don't need to touch (railings, counter tops), use the back of hands and not the finger tips for rubbing eyes - that too if absolutely necessary, self-quarantine yourself if it feels like you are coming down with something (6 feet away from others seems to be a safe distance) and seek medical attention, cough or sneeze into your sleeve, and don't miss meals or sleep. Avoid shaking hands for a couple of months until this settles down - people will understand. Even better, imitate the Israelis and say namaste. Finally, the time-honored Indian home remedy of a glass of hot milk with turmeric works well to provide relief from symptoms of the common cold if taken early.

  2. What is being done to reach members of the population such as day laborers who do not have access to English language? The virus is not going to distinguish whom it uses to hop across the population. Are public health messages being prepared in accessible formats and being taken into the poorer sections of the cities and into the villages? Same question for members of service and retail industries who would come in contact with multiple people as a routine. Distribution of SOPs for placing hand sanitizers at store entrances, periodic wiping down of railings and bannisters, etc.

  3. 70% ethanol-30% water (surgical spirit is another name for ethanol), 70% isopropyl alcohol-30% water (rubbing alcohol is another name for the mixture), or 10% bleach work well for wiping surfaces to kill most germs including many viruses. Check the bleach container to make sure that it is within expiry date.
