The older part of Savannah is laid out as a grid. But it is the multiple squares that truely make that part of the city great. Cool oasis full of old oaks and shade.

The only "attractive" parking lot I have ever seen was in San Jose. It had islands seperating lanes with parking spaces. In the islands were tall pines or cedars that were about 60 ft tall.

Sometimes people who want to build low rise multi unit housing with business space on the ground floor can't not just because of zoning laws. Sometimes it's about opposition froor area residents and city politicians. Before you think I'm going off about it being single family homes bias being the opponents. There is a owner of a coin operated laundry in San Francisco* that has wanted to demolish the single story structure and build new housing. With business space on the ground floor. He has met opposition from local residents and the city council. This is in a city with a severe housing shortage. *Any city that refers to itself as "The City" really needs a collective slap upside the head. I like SF. But I won't go back again. They're letting the inmates run the asylum

In my life I've walked, biked, took the bus and drove to work*. It usually boiled down to what was easier, more convienent and if i had plans after work would require me to drive. So I think I've seen things from both sides. There are buttheads who drive cars. There are also buttheads who cycle. The worst behavior I think I've ever seen by cyclists has been groups of cyclists on road bikes riding as groups taking up the whole road when they have dedicated bike lanes. Blowing through stop signs and red lights. The stop signs usually without even slowing down. If i have to obey the rules of the road (and I do mostly, yes I will drive over the speed limit often in self defense) so do they. This also applies to people walking. *The facility i worked at had a private commuter railroad that run through the facility. There were people who who ride to work on and they would let them off even though there was no station.

I'm not going to claim I could easily cycle to IKEA. My question is why would want to go to IKEA at all. If I'm going to by furniture I'd rather by furniture made locally

Another thing contributing to lack of place is the sameness of what some accountant thinks is architecture. And its not just chain stores and franchise "restaurants". I see newer apartment complexes go up and they all look like they use ond of three sets of plans.

Funny thing is most of the housing being built in the area I live in is multi unit (8 to 16 units) apartment building naturally touted as "condos"
