  1. I think of the Age of Steam as being the period of double and triple expansion steam engines. The AoS effectively came to an end with Turbina and Dreadnought. Even though steam piston engine technology continued in use on the cargo and passenger side for some time. Turbines and reduction gearing aren't cheap. Steam piston technology finally replaced by diesel.

  5. Railways were well established by this point. Shipping is still cheaper though. Consider the existence of more carriers on the Great Lakes. Iron ore could be shipped by rail from the Misabe Range of Minnesota to steel mills on the Great Lakes. And in winter it can be. But once the Lakes are open for shipping the ore boats go back into operation. Plus in Mahan's time rail transportation of bulk materials (ore, coal, crude oil, stone etc) was actually more expensive than today when looking at cost per ton in constant dollars.

  8.  @JamesPhieffer  A couple of years ago I was on vacation on the west side of Maui (Napili Bay). The people staying in the resort told us that the week previously there had been 15 foot surf coming in. I then showed them video of the 40 footers that were hitting Duluth a couple of days before.

  16. Robert Ballard was contracted by the National Georaphic to explore some of these wrecks. This was around 2005 iirc (2009). Finding the wrecks was no problem. They also found circular stone structures up around 40 meters in diameter. Some of the structures had crude stone "towers" in their centers. It has been speculated that the central tower may have acted as central support for wooden beam supporting a roof. The structures may be the oldest habitation with stone used in their construction yet found. The area was last above water around 8,000 BCE.

  21.  @royasturias1784  If we are going to blame anybody blame William Randolf Hearst. The Maine's forward magazine in all likelihood detonated due to a fire in an adjacent coal bunker. When the wreck was salvaged in the early 20th century in order to clear the harbor one thing found that supposedly supported a mine explosion was there was some hull plating curled inwards. After being raised she was towed out to sea and sunk. The Maine has been found of the north coast of Cuba in about 9000 feet of water iirc.

  22. Hood may hot of been penetrated by a deck hit. Look at Drach's analysis of her loss in an earlier video. Hood's belt was fully exposed in area where she was likely hit when at full speed due to the water flow along her side.

  24. The Iowa's had a system of I beams with trolleys that allowed the shells to be stowed onboard ship in the magazines. I really don't think I'd want a loading hatch on the barrette. But then you do have crew access hatches. Another factor in the disappearance of dedicated dive bombers was the expanded use of fighters in the fighter bomber role. Plus with the emergence of jets up until guided missiles came into their own the engagement time was cut significantly

  27. Egyptian cotton rapidly took over the cotton market during the Civil War. The CSA was never realistically in a position to gain a strategic victory during the ACW. The best it could hope for was to make victory too costly for the North.

  28.  @Ensign_Nemo  I've talked to a number of crew off of ocean freighters and they hated sailing on the lakes. Not for the size of the waves but because they come at you at a higher frequency. A bad storm will literally pound the hell out of a ship. Plus as I understand it the ore boats will twist in a blow

  29. The coal storage facility at PH had to handle coal going both ways. Not only coal being loaded onto ships to refill their bunkers but also coal being off loaded from ships to stock the facility. I would imagine that this facility was pretty comparable to other coaling stations used. All it real needs is an oversized Christmas Tree in the middle.

  32. It's my understanding they do. A friend has written a number of Great Lakes shipwreck books. One thing he describes in one book is that in heavy seas you can see the ship twisting by looking down the length of the tunnel.
