The lead image is the USS Shaw blowing up ofcourse. I'm surprised she did not take the floating drydock with her. Shaw her self was put back into service after having a temporary bow installed (practice for putting temporary bows 9n ships which would come in handy) and being sent back to the West Coast. Mare Island or Brementon I would think. I actually have an inbuilt 1/250th scale model of the Arizona from Digital Navy. Doesn't take up much space though as it is a card stock model. By using the scaling function on a printer it can easily scaled up to a larger scale.

@royasturias1784 If we are going to blame anybody blame William Randolf Hearst. The Maine's forward magazine in all likelihood detonated due to a fire in an adjacent coal bunker. When the wreck was salvaged in the early 20th century in order to clear the harbor one thing found that supposedly supported a mine explosion was there was some hull plating curled inwards. After being raised she was towed out to sea and sunk. The Maine has been found of the north coast of Cuba in about 9000 feet of water iirc.

The executive in charge of programming at the History Channel. "History? We ain't got no history. We don't have to show you no stinkin' history!"

The deck armor is much thinner than the belt armor. Plus even if the Atizona's deck armor was upgraded during her 1930/31 modernization I doubt it was upgraded to the ability to withstand a 16" shell falling nearly vertically. The armor if upgraded was probably to a standard to with stand any projected AP bombs that could reasonably be expected.

The problem with conspiracy theories is there is always too many people in the loop. Eventually somebody talks or says something. Did the US Navy and Army know something was going to happen. There were indications from message traffic that was intercepted. The long message to the Japanese embassy in DC was certainly an indicator. Prior to Dec 7th there had been at least two warnings issued by the War Department* about possible hostile actions on the part of the Japanese. It is my understanding that the War and State Departments were of the opinion that if Japan went to war against the US hostilities would begin in the Western Pacific. If there was any criminal negligence at Pearl Harbour it was the failure of the officers in the communications center to take the report of the Ward seriously. *After WWII the War Department was changed to become the Department of Defense. Prior to and during WWll the Secratary of the Navy was still a cabinet position iirc.

I would imagine so. Plus cleaning might be needed not only for powder residue but also for removal of any material left in the rifling from the driving band on the shells.

The problem there is the turret catapult was on top of turret 3. Unless Arizona still had a midship catapult.

@MotoroidARFC Submariners are also used to being cooped up in an enclosed environment for months at a time.

There is also footage of the attack taken by an Army NCO from Hickam Field with his own 16mm camera. I'm wondering if the Navy or Army had ratings or technical personnel who were assigned specific duties to film or take still photos of stuff when the excrement hit the fan pre war. There were obviously photographic personnel whose job was to take photographs and shoot film during the war.

If it was necessary to clear space in the anchorage Arizona would likely have been raised enough to allow it to be towed out and sunk. Utah is still where she sank also.

@Trebuchet48 Bug Drach also goes on to state that the photo was of the Shaw.
