There is that. I've seen the same thing in the auto industry. From the early 70s up thru 2005. In the 80s US cars were decried for build quality. And rightly so. But if the specs call for panel gaps of x and the competition is using x/2 or x/3 that's not necessarily productions fault. Plus I repeatedly saw management pushing to meet or exceed production quotas per shift. I once had to cover a weekend shift in an engin block machining dept and there was a call to figure out what was going on. The production supervisor told us that they were losing clamping during the machining operation. He wanted the hydraulic pressure turned up. The drills in the station were so dull they where overcoming the hydraulic system. Instead of changing the tooling he just had to hit the numbers. If they had started breaking taps then he would have had a lot of esplaining to do as Ricky used to say.
