The Iowa's had a system of I beams with trolleys that allowed the shells to be stowed onboard ship in the magazines. I really don't think I'd want a loading hatch on the barrette. But then you do have crew access hatches. Another factor in the disappearance of dedicated dive bombers was the expanded use of fighters in the fighter bomber role. Plus with the emergence of jets up until guided missiles came into their own the engagement time was cut significantly

Perhaps the single most important supply item that the UK was getting from the US would have been fuel oil. Bunker oil for ships and high octane aviation fuel.

One question regarding the bunker oil still present on wrecks. At great depths* just how well would that bunker fuel be able to be pumped due to both the environmental temperature and the problem of pumping up from the Abyssal Plains or worse in the areas of trenches along subduction zones. Plus it's not only the bunker fuel on warships you also have the oil on cargo and passenger vessels lost not only during the war but also from peacetime shipping losses. One place where we might see a first attempt at this is from a tanker that is being monitored off of Monterey on the California coast. I think that wreck is in relatively shallow water as compared to say Bismarck or Yorktown. Additionally we simply do not know where every wreck is. We still don't have highly detailed topographic maps of the sea floor as seen in the recent collision Connecticut suffered.

Yes and all the scenic spots that cater to sailors on shore leave. Saloons, cat houses etc.

One difference between say going ashore on a hostile beach and doing damage control is with damage control the immediate danger is right in front of your face.

If the boats could of been lowered with just the required crew and loaded from the boarding hatches it might have helped. IMO there were a number of people to blame for Titanics loss. 1) Bruce J Ismay. His pressuring Smith to make a fast passage contributed. 2) Smith not telling Ismay to stay out of operational decisions. 3) The nameless officer who locked up the binoculars for the lookouts. Also given the ice warnings if Titanic had searchlights it would make sense to use them. 4) Harland and Wolfe. They built Titanic with a double bottom but should have built her with a double hull at least up to her maximum draft waterline. 5) Harland and Wolfe again for not extending the watertight bulkheads up to at least above where they were. Given how many compartments were compromised it might not have made a difference in the end but she might have stayed afloat long enough for the transfer of some passengers and crew. 6) The captain of Californian. The failure of Californian to respond to the distress rockets falls on him. 7) The Board of Trade for not changing regulations in regards to passenger ships in order to keep up with technology.
