It's not just the Black Sea that has ancient settlements hiding in its depths. When Bob Ballard was doing a project for National Geographic on the sunken British and French warships off of Anzac Cove (Gallipoli) they accidently discovered a number of circular stone structures up to about 30 meters in diameter iirc. They varied in size. All of them featured an entrance at one point and a central taller stone structure in the center. I wonder if these may actually of been some type of communal dwelling. The central pillar would provide support for roof beams which would also sit on the outer wall on the other end. Then roof the structure with thatch. The area was last above water at least 8k years ago. Plus I would think they were abandoned long before they were submerged unless they went underwater during the melt water pulses a the end of the last Glacial Advance*. *I won't say at the end of the last Ice Age because we are technically still inan Ice Age and have been for millions of years. We just see periodic warm periods in between glacial advances. As to the causes of the glacial advances there are the Melenkovick Cycles but another contributing factor is probably the rise of the Panama Isthmus and the blocking of circulation between the Atlantic and Pacific of warm surface water.

I agree that it wasn't just the bombs. The Soviet attack into Manchuria shocked the Japanese in terms of just how fast the Red Army advanced. The IJA simply wasn't equipped to handle a large combined arms operations. But I also think that there is significant modern revisionism at work regarding the use of the bombs. One major aspect being that Truman wanted to send a message to Stalin. In truth Truman had several options in regards to ending the war. Blockade and starve the Japanese into surrender. Carrying out Operation Olympic. Or trying to end the war by dropping the bombs. The first two would have led to far greater loss of life than the bombs caused. Remember the deadliest air attack against Japan wasn't Hiroshima. It was the fire bombing of Tokyo. In fact air operations by Lemays bomber force occured right until the Japanese used for peace in mid August.

That picture f the U-Boat being moved by a truck trailer combo reminds me of the pictures one sees of the road transport of oversized shipments. Large cranes etc. Imagine being a German or Austrian farmer cutting hay and seeing a U-Boat moving along a road. Wrecks of U-Boats ar scattered all over the world. The arctic, the Atlantic, Indian and Paific Oceans. The Med. Rivers in Canada. And Lake Michigan of all places. A captured WWI boat was on display in Chicago and then later towed out and sunk in a gunnery exercise by the former excursion steamer Eastland

As these were type II boats were they üntersized boats

@tomgucwa7319 After Eastland was raised her upper deck at least was removed and she eventually wound up being converted to a Naval Reserve training vessel. So Lake Michigan holds the record for the highest depth above sea level for a sunken German sub. The sub was found a few years back. But they are keeping the location secret as the wreck is very hazzardous to dive on.

What was life in general like for the average sailor in the RN, USN etc during WWII. Aside from duty hours and combat stations.
