When it gets to the point that we are looking at too many species or sub-species of Homo maybe science suould step back and consider either the "sub-species" as the variation in the species or perhaps sub-types. One way that the sub-types could arise is the relative isolation of different groups of Homo living thousands of miles apart. But these sub-types are all still the same species.

I don't know if there would have been a land connection between Sulawesi and the Phillipines. Yes during glacial advances sea levels would have been lower. How much depends on just how extensive the ice sheets were. But also could there have been tectonic uplift or subsidence in the region. Plus remember rhinos got there.

Why is this a surprise. It's well known that the current "native" (1) population of the Americas are descended from Siberian populations. Denosovian (2) genes are known to exist in East Adian populations. 1) Aside from East African populations aren't we all descended from immigrants? 2) Just who were the Denisovans? We need more finds to nail them down.

120,000 years ago just what were the climatic conditions world wide. Was the Earth in period of Glacial Advance or an Interglacial. This factors into just how humans (1) would have reached Australia/Sahul and when. And this is important because people would not just have sprinted south. One of the big factors is sea crossings. Some obiviously along the Wallace Line appear to have been deep water channels even at glacial maximums. Others would have been dry land. Any deep water crossing implies one of two things. Either accidental drifting of small groups clinging to vegetation swept out to sea. Or the existence of some sort of water craft ranging from rafts to dugout canoes. Just how far bavk do water craft go? 1) How do we define human. Homo Sapiens? Inluding Neanderthals, Denisovans and Erectus?

@HighlyCompelling I was thinking the time period was around an interglacial. Tue one between the Illinios and Wisconsin (1). I have seen there is speculation about just how far back the use of watercraft goes. The definition of watercraft can vary from someone hanging on to a log to actual boats. One thing that raises questions about the use of watercraft is the finds of early Homo on the Philippines. I'm pretty sure there is at least on deep water passage between the Philippines and the islands of Indonesia. Another is just how did Homo Florienses arrive on Flores. 1) The terms really are not used anymore but do provide a useful place holder for eras of glacial advances. But the periods of advances include pauses, meltbacks and advances.

Java is an island in South East Asia. Not South West Asia.
