Was there a Trojan War? Undoubtedly. But as Micheal Wood closed his 8 part documentary out. Which war? And which Troy? Troy, or Illium, or Willusia if you prefer given its site on the Dardenelles controlled trade between the Aegean and the Black Sea (along with any other city state that may have been situated on the Bosphorus. This would lead to it's being rich and a ripe target. Personally I think Homer's Illiad has its roots in orally transmitted tales of a campaign or raid in the Bronze Age on a city or fortress located somewhere on the Anatolian coast. Was at Hisilric? Quite possibly. Given the tradition in the Greek and Roman world that placed it there. Remember they were much closer to the time of the events. Also the Illiad covers a small part of the war. Although it does allude to both earlier and later events. The most important thing about the Illiad and the Oddessy is it marks the beginning of narrative literature in the west in that it is the only works we have from the period. There were probably others as well. Now lost to history
