  1. There may be no nearby habitable planets. Nearby in astronomical terms. But, if humanity is ever able to take the leap to interstellar flight it will not matter. By that time technology will be so far in advance of what we have today that it would be just as easy to build space habitats even while teraforming any usable planets. Barren planets incapable of being teraformed would wind up being huge strip mines.
