I remember seeing a comment in the 70s or 80s that every Soviet citizen could legally receive 1 item of mail from a foreign country. The suggestion was that the US should send every citizen a Sears catalog.

I worked with several men who were stationed in Korea in the late 60s. They all told me there were guys that volunteered for Nam just to get out of Korea.

@kayzeaza If North Korea did something really insane all on their own I suspect China and Russia would act to keep them in line.

Reminds me of the joke about which part of the body thought it should be in charge. They had a fine discussion until the Arsehole went on strike. Explains a lot doesn't it.

@carta8399 I don't know if it still holds but if you wanted the best textile machinery you went to Italy. They also made very good machine tools. The oldest Industrial company is Beretta.

That's a line that ranks tight up there with "nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition"

@TribuneAquila The statement certainly was not from a Sears executive. It was Jerry Pournelle.

With the advent of good and cheap 3D resin printers a lot of modeling hobbies will be changing.

Many companies in the US will work multiple shifts. It depends on a number of things. First is demand. And even then companies will usually resort to overtime (voluntary or not) as it is usually cheap to pay OT than hire additional staff. But sometimes it makes sense from a production standpoint to work 24/7 with people working a variety of schedules. One example of this could be say a steel mill or foundry operation. Another might be refinery.

The first time I ever ran across a Tolkien pun was in Heinlein's The Glory Road where the hero Oscar Gordon says don't make a Hobbit of it.

The idea of pressing the button on a channel involving the Cold War is chilling in and of itself
