Napier's last hurrah and sacrifice to the temple of mechanical complexity. At least they didn't try and build a version of the Jumo 224. Don't get me wrong. The Deltic is an amazing powerplant. And sounds wonderful. PS I also happen to think that it was out of work Napier engine designers and development engineers that were hired to design the 1.5 Liter supercharged V-16 intended for F-1 use.

@richardcolligan3821 That depends. Hydrogen fueled ICE vehicles still have pollution issues in terms of Nitrous Oxides. Hydrogen fueled vehicles using fuel cells and electric motors should be cleaner in use. Cleaner in manufacturing may or may not be equal. In my opinion for what it's worth the current best option for regular use is a hybrid

The Deltic was a triangular layout opposed piston supercharged diesel. The top cylinders were horizontal with the other two rows 30° from vertical. All three crankshafts geared to a common output shaft. One crankshaft had to rotate in the opposite rotation to allow the engine to work. Much of Napier's basic knowledge about opposed piston diesels came from their license purchased from Junkers.

Plus sadly in today's world resume inflation does exist. I am not saying that it is done by everyone. But it does happen.

Let's say this happens. The best place to run the pipelines on the surface is going to be along railroad right of ways. Railroads have always done everything they can to reduce extra costs involved in moving freight over grades. The lower the percentage of grade the more efficient it is. To get over really high areas. The best option might be tunneling machines.

@akmurf7429 Fairbanks Morse along with Napier's in Britian purchased manufacturing rights from Junkers for opposed piston diesels. F-M did development work on an diamond layout 24 cylinder diesel intended for submarines and small patrol vessels. The D-24 was cancelled. As usual for anything related to unusual engines the Old Machine Press web site is the place to go.

If you have a constant diameter roller on the piston pushing against the output plate that rollers surface speed per minute will not match up to the surface speed per minute across the radius of the cam track on the output plate. The roller will be sliding or skidding at some point along its length. This is simply one more attempt at a barrel engine.

The only engines l can think of that can literally be considered 1 stroke in that every stroke is a power stroke are those that rely on an expanding gas with an external heat source. IE steam engines which typically have work done by both sides of the piston. As well as double or triple expansion.

@jeffbybee5207 Ideally yes. The issue is what if you have a completely flat charge on the battery and have to limp home or to reach a charging station. Not being able to meet the demands of driving conditions required if you stuck in a single optimal engine speed. Perhaps an option could be being able to switch between a constant RPM setting and an on demand setting.
