  1. Yes, the Greeks and Romans along with the Egyptians and likely other painted statues, temples and other public buildings. But I have to say that I find the bare statue devoid of pigment vastly more beautiful. Why? Because the naked stone, no matter the color of the stone, displays the skill and technique of the true artist in their creation. The sculptor. Painting the objects to me was just gilding the lily.
