I question as to whether or not the Roman's actually used Roman numerals for serious work or whether they had an informal system of signs for doing calculations that was used by people who actually used math in their profession. Bankers, surveyors, engineers etc. The formal system may simply have been used for official documents etc. And by an informal systems one individual may have his own symbology
