The western Allies especially the Americans with time on target artillery fire from multiple batteries and multiple shell sizes. The air bursts are going to strip off your supporting infantry. Either by casualties or simply driving them to cover. Contact fuses throwing erupting cololums of soil into the air will partially degrade your vision. Smoke will degrade even worse. Once the enemy brings his numbers to bear in close you only have three options. Fight and die in place, retreat or surrender. In the end #3 is best as far as the crew is concerned. As far as Germany is concerned, they just should have stayed home
