@samsonsoturian6013 We are a lot closer to dropping that x number of years away today than we were 20 years ago. Mainly imo because of advances in material sciences and the engineering done to bring higher temperature superconductors to market. If I was Biden I'd pump double or triple into fusion. With some if the money going to small startups with the proviso that the Feds get the right to use the tech at lower costs. Site any reactors at current shuttered coal power plants to start with.

Let's say Lockheed is close to bringing this online (I really doubt it) the market potential outside of aviation is huge. Power generation, shipping, desalination.

The radar absorbing material was likely plywood.

Imagine a world were certain resources are no longer a source of potential conflict. But humans will likely find some thing else to fight about.

The US Navy was funding research by Dr Robert Bussard on Inertial and Electrostatic confinement reactors circa 1995-2000. Bussard's test reactors were getting better results than projected. Still way short of working reactors that produce net power though. The Navy was restricted to the amount of money they could invest due to the DOE being the primary designated agency in charge of fusion research. And the DOE is strictly focused on Tokamaks. Ideally I would think that a reactor running the Boron11/Proton cycle would be ideal as it has the potential to generate electricity directly with no heat exchangers, coolant and steam turbines.

It's a well known non secret that between the USAF and DARPA they have a considerable Black Budget used for secret programs. No doubt some of these programs have been for classified aircraft programs. And of these programs some may have lead to limited production aircraft. Some were pure research programs. And others were likely failures that failed to meet their design goals. The F117 started as the top secret Have Blue. The SR-71 was originally a top secret program for the CIA known as Oxcart. As was the U-2. There are reasons that the USAF and DARPA fund this stuff. One is to keep the aviation companies busy. Let them go out of business and we lose a national asset. Starting up a new aviation company from the ground is not like opening a law office were all you need is some office space, desks and computers.
