It's pretty inaccurate to show New Guinea as being completely Indonesian. Indonesia controls the western half of the island. One reason for Javas incredible population density is it's incredibly productive agricultural sector. Plus Java has long been the center of culture and power in the islands followed by Sumatra and Bali. But Java is really starting to push the limits of the population it can sustain in terms of clean water from what I understand. In comparision to US states by area Java is slightly smaller than North Carolina.

One reason for Indonesia's very active volcanoes is the Australuan Plate is racing northwards at about twice the average rate for tectonic plate movements. Plus due to Plate Tectonics Sumatra and Java are slowly being folded with the hinge point in the Sunda Straight. This is also why Krakatoa is so dangerous. Highly explosive magma infused with high concentrations of water from material being dragged down into the subduction zone just to the south. Most of Indonesia's volcanoes line up along this subduction zone from Northwestern Sumatra to Flores. Add in one of the largest supervolcanoes on the planet in Toba. The rest of Indonesia's volcanoes are scattered across the region of the Banda Arc and Northern Suwlawise. There is another subduction zone active in this region.

Theres a precedent here. Part of DC used to be in Virginia. Turn all of the non Federal property in the District over to Maryland.

@briantarigan7685 North Carolina is bigger than Java. Most US states are bigger than Java. A whole lot of begetting going on.

@TheRogueAdventurers If possible IMO we should reduce the use of plastics in consumer goods. Both in amount and to those plastic types that lend themselves to easy recycling. People focus on renewables but things that concerns me about them is land use, wildlife impact, mining for required materials and recycling of systems past their life span. Hopefully one of the fusion startups will crack that problem. At one time just in the US more money was spent on cosmetics annually than the Federal Budget for both fusion research and NASA iirc.

@jjj32801 And put them in the absolute crappiest places possible. And the employees are required to live there

The most crowded river in the world is "da Nile"

@DMH-bt2zo North Carolina by itself is larger than Java.

The pressure wave was detected 6 or 7 times. Mostly by recording barometers. A useful arguement to use against those modern idiots. Flat Earthers

To quote the old Lone Ranger and Tonto joke. What do you mean WE white man.

Even if we get away from hydrocarbons being the primary transport energy source the petrochemical industry is not going away completely.

If it was a nuc then South Africa followed by Israel are the likely suspects. Myself I think the incident was an impact of a bolide

If the Ice Cap over Greenland melts completely by that time humanity will have moved away from fossil fuels to provide energy. Between renewables and fusion finally coming on line there simply will be no need. There will likely still be some petrochemical industry around. The stuff is simply too useful for other stuff. What I wonder about is just what caused Greenland to freeze over in the first place.

While I agree that Venice makes sense as the worst placed European city in the immediate term. Long term no. That honor goes to Napoli. Building a city right next to a supervolcano site. Hard to beat that one.

You're stranded alone in the middle of the Sahara. You die. And not pleasantly.

@chipsramek3868 Yes sink holes. Big enough to swallow Paris.

Iceland actually had extensive forest coverage when the Norse arrived. Don't call them Vikings. To go viking was an action. After the Norse settled they gradually cut trees for fuel and timber until the island was stripped of its trees. And the Norse were probably not the first people to settle on Iceland. It is thought that there was a small population of Irish monks living there.

What caused Greenland to freeze over in the first place. None of the large islands in the Canadian Artic have permanent large ice caps. Theres a YouTube channel that shows there are large numbers of ancient monumental structures on Earth that are oriented to the cardinal directions. Such as the pyramids in Egypt are oriented to to true north. Yet there is a second group of structures from different regions oriented to a point over the north end of Greenland. About 73°N47°W. And a third group to a point South of that. And a fourth group South of that. I do not agree with the individuals idea why. I just find the data interesting. And how did he find this data. Google Earth. Google Earth and Maps are very useful for finding past evidence of some of the effects of just what happened at the end of the last Glacial Advance.

Add in the dams that China is building or planning on building on the rivers that flow down into India. China is playing a long term game here. This is probably why China invaded Tibet in the first place.

I'm wondering if part of this is to move the capital to an area that is under less threat to volcanic eruptions. Looking at a map of volcanoes in the country Borneo and Western New Guinea* are the only major land areas without any active or potentially volcanoes. Sometimes I think the US should move the capital from DC to somewhere with really nasty weather. Not that DC doesn't. It used to be considered a hardship post for foreign diplomats. I'm thinking somewhere like Fargo or maybe Bismarck in North Dakota. Someplace with about a 140°F temperature swing between highs and lows. At least move all the unelected officials there. *I can't remember just what the Indonesians call the region.
