It's pretty inaccurate to show New Guinea as being completely Indonesian. Indonesia controls the western half of the island. One reason for Javas incredible population density is it's incredibly productive agricultural sector. Plus Java has long been the center of culture and power in the islands followed by Sumatra and Bali. But Java is really starting to push the limits of the population it can sustain in terms of clean water from what I understand. In comparision to US states by area Java is slightly smaller than North Carolina.

One reason for Indonesia's very active volcanoes is the Australuan Plate is racing northwards at about twice the average rate for tectonic plate movements. Plus due to Plate Tectonics Sumatra and Java are slowly being folded with the hinge point in the Sunda Straight. This is also why Krakatoa is so dangerous. Highly explosive magma infused with high concentrations of water from material being dragged down into the subduction zone just to the south. Most of Indonesia's volcanoes line up along this subduction zone from Northwestern Sumatra to Flores. Add in one of the largest supervolcanoes on the planet in Toba. The rest of Indonesia's volcanoes are scattered across the region of the Banda Arc and Northern Suwlawise. There is another subduction zone active in this region.
