But if your producing a show about a historical period then the cast should fit the ethnic profiles of the time. And if it is a mixed race cast the people should be cast in roles that reflect actual history. My wife loves watching that abortion called Bridgerton. Personally I find it stupid. The producers now say the amount of black characters in the show reflect an "alternate history". What alternate history? The one in their heads? Ask yourself just what color is normally associated with evil in Western Culture. I especially do not like the term Afro American. Does that mean people who's ethnic origins are in North Africa and have Semetic ancestors can not be African Americans? Given the the overwhelming majority of what we call African Americans have their ethnicity in West Africa perhaps a more accurate term would be Bantu American.

The Fertile Crescent, the Yangtze or Yellow River valleys and Mesoamerica. I think there is some question whether Egypt developed the idea completely independently. But use of the written word is an entirely different matter. I remember seeing a statistic concerning the publishing industry from around 2003. Just Spain alone saw more published in that year than the area from Morocco to Pakistan. Granted a large percentage of the books published in Spain might have been trashy fiction. If the supposedly literate swath from Morocco to Pakistan saw that little what does it say about Sub Saharan Africa.

  68. I have long been of the opinion that myths and legends come from three sources. The first is that they are a garbled retelling of actual events that as they were handed down from generation to generation they changed so much that little beyond the basic story remains. I would place things like Flood Legends in this group. The second is they were a way for people to give explanation to the world around them. Myths such as the Greek ones regarding the Cosmos. The third is they began as tall tales told around the fire. If our civilization fell could we our descendants have myths regarding a Niel of Ohio who journeyed to the Moon on a pillar of fire. Or would Paul Bunyan become a figure of myth rather than a tall tale. And if our civilization fell to the hunter gatherer stage so that the only traces of us would be Mount Rushmore and some of out larger dams by the time our children's, children's, children once more rose to the heights one of the few signatures left to them of our time would Richard M Nixon*. Tell that to a liberal and watch them explode. *His name is on the plaque attached to the Descent Stage of the Eagle sitting on the Lunar surface at Tranquillity Base

  81. To be honest having known a number of lawyers in the US in a social environment. A lot of them haven't really impressed me with their intelligence. I will give them credit for graduating from law school and passing the bar exam. It's not easy to get in. You have to have a high enough GPA (1) after all. But in terms of life skills and common sense they did not strike me as being any smarter than a lot of people I've met. 1) GPA is not the be all and end all. My stepson wanted to go to med school. To get accepted you need not only a high enough GPA. But also a BS in PreMed or BioChem. Not easy degrees. Plus you need to do well on the annual MCad. Think an SAT for Med School. He shot himself in the foot by taking all honors classes during the 5 years of his undergraduate studies (he had to drop a required class one year due an illness). This was at a Public University in the US (UW-Madison) that has a pretty good reputation. Because he took all honors courses he faced a tougher grading challenge. If he had taken the regular non honors courses he would most likely had a 4.0/3.9 GPA. Instead he had a 3.78. Below the Med School GPA for that year pay one point. He still applied to various medical schools (2). He got one interview and blew that one. I talked to my physician about it and his take was the kid shot himself in the ass by taking the honors courses. Because once you are in med school it doesn't mean squat. At the same time the local branch school of the UW system had a 100% placement of it its PreMed students into Medical School programs every year. And to my knowledge still does. All of which proves that sometimes really bright people, which the kid is. Do really dumb things overall. 2) Applying to Med Scool is a racket all in itself. To apply to med school you have to pay an application fee. Given that the majority of applicants are turned down. Especially in the top ranked med schools.

In Africas case I think it most likely that there were instances of coastal fishermen getting swept out to sea and eventually winding up in Brazil. But they were most likely all males. Maintain the natural gas distribution systems. Without these systems and infrastructure society would quickly fall apart. 1) Its not race that sees these men in these jobs. Its a work ethic. But the roots of higher paths go back to into Mesopotamian and Indian subcontinent civilizations in my opinion. Is Newton the role inventor of calculus? Liebnitz was arriving at the same point a th the same time. I think we remember Newton more mainly because of his Mathematical Principles. In antiquity there was some working towards calculus. The point is normally nothing is developed or invented in a vacuum. But mathematics truely is a universal logically consistent* system of of finding answers to problems. At least those problems that can be defined by it. *I think to really crasp mathematics you need to understand cause and effect. If your world view is based on magic or mysticism then IMO you are going to have problems.

  115. In any democracy the attitudes of local elected offcials on matters outside the borders of their own constituency. Especially outside their own national borders. Have little or no effect on the polices and practices that actually matter inside their own district, town, city village etc. It has about as much effect as declaring your city a "nuclear free zone" as declaring solidarity with Gaza has on whether or not the potholes get repaired. Or public spaces such as parks are maintained. Or local water systems, sewers and other public services are managed properly. Local elected officials are elected to look after local matters. If your local elected officials do not look after these matters but instead use the position to posture in the local community they should be voted out in the next election. This applies to communities in any nation that has real elections. The practice of some local officials in any democracy to enrich themselves at the expense of the citizenry is another matter.   150. It may not distract from my enjoyment in watching a western movie but when the film has its characters using firearms from a later period than the film takes place in. That to me shows a complete lack of historical research on the part of the producers. As to how side arms were carried in Old West (or Real West as opposed to the Hollywood West) there were a variety of rigs. The side carry was generally much higher on the side than the fast draw we see in the movies. Other rigs included the reverse draw style holster. This is the typical carry style for the New Model Remmington that was the standard US Army side arm prior to the adoption of the Colt Single Action Army (aka Peacemaker or Model 1873) and the Smith & Wesson Scholfield. There were also side draw rigs with the pistol carried in front on the opposite side of the dominant hand. And lastly shoulder holsters. The fast draw rig is entirely a creation of Hollywood as far as I know. The "bullet impact" as shown in the movies is purely for cinematic drama. But one thing to consider. The bullets used in the period had far different terminal characteristics than say a jacketed full powered battle rifle round of WWII. The bullets of the 1850 to 1890 Real West were lead with no jacketing. These will have a tendency to deliver all of their energy to the target*. Just not enough to throw somebody across the room. The rope trick was used in the John Wayne movie Rio Lobo on Grorge Plimpton. *As an aside in the 1980s the local police department was looking to change service weapons. The choices were between 9mm and .45ACP. The department went with .45ACP. The round used in the Colt 1911. My brother-in-law was in charge of the program. I asked him why they went with the .45ACP versus the 9x19. After all the 9mm offered higher capacity. His said that first they looked at data for all police reports in which an officer had to fire his weapon. It came out to two or three rounds per incident. Second was the possibility of innocent civilians being hit by rounds that over penetrated. This was a big problem with the 9mm. The .45ACP had a much lower chance of over penetration.

  188. I used to work for a company here in the US that builds and services machinery and systems for dealing with "waste" (1). The primary side of the business was dewatering machinery for "sludge". Sludge is what is left after sewage plants are finished with the bio side of treatment. If you want to get the solids (poop once it goes through the digesters) you need to dewater it. There are a number of ways to do this. One of the most efficient are large industrial centrifuges. That is what we built. Since I retired l think they are currently building machines with a diameter of around 1 meter on their spin axis. We also built machines for the oil recovery industry, various food and meat processing applications etc. The owner and founder had two sayings. If we had a job that came in that did not smell of roses. The saying for that was "it smells like money". The other was. "lt's a growth industry. Every year there are more people and they all poop. And somebody has to do something with it." 1) There us no such thing as "waste". What most call waste is simply a resource that no one has found a use for. Or is looking for an economical process to employ to that use. The chemical side of the PetroChrmical industry largely derives from research into finding uses for the gunk left over from refining petroleum. The problem comes from the people and governments that just look at "waste" and decide the cheapest option is to just dump it somewhere.

In addition East Africa is not populated by ethnic Zulus. In the US some ethnicities once they could afford a single or multifamily home would look at the space devoted to a front or rear lawn and immediately tearout any lawn and devote it to vegetable gardens. Italians used to be known for this. Not a problem in my book as long as it is kept up. Used to grow a lot of our own vegetables and some fruits ourselves. But building over every square foot or meter of lawn/garden space does something else. In warmer weather l can be outside looking after the flower beds out front. And when l take short break in the backyard it feels about 5 to 10° F cooler simply because of two large shade trees. This is another benefit of what l call private green space. The down side is clean up in the Fall. But as to private vegetable gadens. There is now a movement, at least in the US to seek to eliminate them as some see them as "contributing to excessive greenhouse gases due to their lack of efficiency". If l wished l CV ould cut down my shade trees, tear out the lawn and convert it all to growing vegetables. Maybe l would not be self sufficent but it would go a long way towards eating better in the Summer and Fall. Nothing like a Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato sandwich made with lettuce and tomatoes you just picked.

City and county officials knew the information that was being reported by the media was wrong but did little to counter it. I am not saying the shooting was justified (2). I am saying that social media is a tool that can cause a great deal of harm. 1) The police were there because Mr Blake's girlfriend had a protection order requiring him not to be in her presence. She called 911. There was also an outstanding arrest warrant for Mr Blake for a charge of 3rd Degree Sexual Assault. The officers were there in response to the 911 call and to execute the warrant. 2) I think the number of shots fired comes down to a couple of things. First is adrenaline. Second is the type of weapon. A double action revolver generally takes more effort to fire each round than a semiauto pistol. The officers were armed with semiauto pistols. Officers in Kenosha had not been armed with Revolvers for close to 30 years at the time. And when they carried Revolvers they were limited to issue .38 Special Revolvers or they were allowed to carry .38 Special or .357 Revolvers they had purchased themselves but were only allowed standard .38 Special ammunition. A .357 will chamber both .38 Special and .357 ammunition. The difference is the in the case length and powder charge.

  258. Just how long as amber from the Baltic been traded South? Premium stone for tool making. How long and how far has that been traded. I dont think that 8 or 9 thousand years ago Baltic traders were loading up packs full of amber and hiking down to the Mediterranean to trade. But trade probably was taking place in stages. And it was not necessarily trade as we think of it. If the trade was a commerce based operation just how far can you go before it becomes unprofitable. Rather the trade in these pre-literate societies was likely based more on gifting and prestige.
