  1. Another reason the US decided to take action was the Barbary Pirates, local sultans etc were basically running a protection racket. The European powers at the time had other concerns. A little thing like the Napoleonic Wars for one.

  2. ​ @sabrinatscha2554  The Marine attack on Derna was pretty much run on a shoestring with very few Marines involved. Primarily mercenaries. Greek iirc. But I could be confusing the facts with a movie featuring John Payne and Maureen O'Hara. The Halls of Montezuma refers to Marine involvement in the Mexican War.

  3.  @crowdpleaser1036  From an outsider's perspective it seems a lot of the initial push for more immigration arose out of labor shortages and a supposed jobs (insert nationality) are willing to do. Much of Western Europeis going through a demographic crisis. An aging population with a falling birth rate amongst the native population. Some of the aging population is due to longer life spans. Another part of it in my opinion is the relatively large number of people starting with the Boomers but hot li ited to them that actively decided to not have children. Or stop at one. No matter the reasons stated in my opinion it stems more from selfishness. The I'm not going to put my life on hold for kids attitude.

  4. Although the actual numbers are far less than the ones involved in the Atlantic slave trade there is one crucial difference. The local "governments" where the slaves were coming from were not aiding and abetting the slavers.
