In terms of aerial combat between mismatched foes my father used to tell the story of how they watched a Bf-109 trying to shoot down a Piper Cub being used to direct artillery fire. Due to the terrain and the Cub's pilot throwing his aircraft around in his desire not to get stitched by 7.92 and 20mm the 109 never could score. The 109 eventually flew off most likely out of ammunition.

The Fairy Fox, powered by the Curtiss D-12 which Fairy had bought a manufacturing license for. But the Air Ministry was having none of that*. Fairy would continue to try to get ministry support for engine designs but to no avail. *the D-12/Felix did play some part in moving Rolls Ryce in the direction of the cast block engine resulting in the Kestrel, Merlin, Griffon and R type. As to the D-12 and the Air Ministry. Well, we can't have the sodding Yanks mucking about in our patch old boy. And yes Rolls would of moved to cast block designs sooner or later after all.
