  3. They used the Daimler 601 iirc on their best fighter. Italy's aeromotor industry lagged behind everybody else. They stuck with the seperate cylinder layout long after everybody else had gone to monobloc engines.

  4.  @terryturner4116  I can think of reasons they may have stuck with the seperate cylinder engine so long. One is if you have an issue (bunt piston, bad cylinder etc) you could pull the head and replace the cylinder. Pratt & Whitney had two H-24 sleeve valve engines under development in the late 30s. These had seperate cylinders for this very reason.
