Would Upstate New York be finacially viable? Given the population it likely would. Upstate would also be in the top 20 States for population.

William Randolf Hearst. Hearst did not make his fortune selling newspapers. He made it selling newsprint (1) to other newspapers. The newsprint was made from pulp from trees that grew in forests he owned. He also backed the government regulation of hemp to protect his interests. During WWll the US government relaxed hemp production restrictions because the war effort required so much more rope. Hemp produces superior paper while using less land area. Also makes great fabric. Pulp acreage could then be left to grow as natural forest, used for growing commercial species needed for the building industry or used as orchards for the fruit industry. 1) It's called that probably because newspaper paper sounds redundant. It's is also one of the most widely recycled materials out there. I've reached my three score and ten and when l was a kid they had newspaper drives as fundraisers for Boy Scouts and such.

@marcelma How long does it take a pulp tree to grow until it is harvested. Hemp depending on the location is multiple crops a year at much higher density. One good thing to use for timber production is areas with poor souls. I'm not going to call a timber plantation a forest because it isn't. But we do need to do a better job of forest management in this country. One thing that we could do and often don't is clean out dead fall and other "forest litter". Fires are going to happen. Some species actually need and benefit from fires. But by letting fuel accumulate on the forest floor it makes the situation worse.

Squirrels are rats with furry tails. We used to have red squirrels. Then the greys moved in. Now the black squirrels are pushing the greys out.
