No matter how much people think small arms will become obsolete as long as humans fight wars small arms will still be here. Especially in conditions of asymmetrical warfare. The small arms may change* but as said boots on the ground matter. *any man portable weapon is small arms be it slings, assault rifles or lasers

@modarkthemauler Well the 120mm in the M1A1 uses semi combustible cases ammunition

@80krauser Maybe it was a poor way to state it but s long as we fight wars* small arms will be around. Be it 2021 or 4021. And who knows what will be available then. *the exceptions is arfare that takes place in 3 dimensions to control sea lanes. Or space for that matter. For a modern analogy to the classic space opera simply look at submarine vs submarine

William Mulvaney Maybe if we had just funded the local warlords selling opium and then destroyed the amount not needed for medical usage it probably would have been cheaper in money and lives. The only reason we sent troops into Afghanistan in the first place is because the Taliban told the US to go piss up a rope about bin Laden.

@baneofbanes you're right. Unfortunately they aren't obsolete because humans still fight amongst themselves. We've been doing it as long as we've been around.

@taccovert4 Although I really don't think it makes that much difference. One thing I've wondered about is in the early days of cartridge adoption there were issues with cases tearing and manufacturing. Did anyone do an intermediate step of producing rifle ammunition with a metal base to provide chamber sealing and a paper based upper section to hold the powder and projectile?

@jic1 My thought too. Plus plastic case shells were probably cheaper to produce. During the period when I did hunt it bridged the gap between paper and plastic. I never remember paper being that much of an issue. But then I haven't been in the field for over 50 years. Plus metal base/paper based shells were composite construction.
