@ryanparker4996 How many people really read for deep questions on society, life, politics etc. Most people read for pleasure. As a way to escape the dreary everyday world. The critics may love the artsy fartsy stuff. And some of it sells. But the same 95% of literary fiction falls into the same bracket of Ellison's Law. That 95% of everything is crap.

As to the liberal "elite". Just who the hell elected them along with a lot of the other activists and spokespersons.

One subset of the Roman setting in fiction is the Roman detective novel. I enjoy the ones I've read and listened to. Mostly listen. Audio books with a good narrator are a godsend. Ruth Downie and Lindsey Davis both produced some excellent work. The audio versions are heavily dependent on the narrator. Avoid anything done by the BBC. Downie's publisher has used Simon Vance to good effect while the narrators for Davis's works can put a London East End spin on things 👍. I need to check out more. But to me the gold standard of historical fiction is the Flashman series. The main character is thoroughly unlikable. CAD, coward, paltroon, today and philanderer Flashman always manages to save the day for the Empire or John Company. But the research GMF put into the actual events. The real people involved in the events have fooled people into thinking they were real memoirs.

What the Woke activists do not seem to realize when they protest and scream about "their rights" is they have the exact same rights as everybody else. No less. And NO MORE than anyone else.

There are plenty of "non left wing novelists". Only most of them tend to labor in the ghettos and slums of the literary world. Genres such as SciFi, Techno Thrillers etc. Not in the artsy fartsy world the literary critics love.
